In-House Accountant

Compensation: Competitive salary based on experience (¥5.0M – ¥7.0M annually) + commuting allowance

Position Overview

We are seeking a precise, dependable, and detail-oriented In-House Accountant to join our finance team at our Tokyo headquarters. In this office-based role, you will manage daily accounting operations, corporate bookkeeping, vendor payments, and financial reporting specific to our logistics and freight forwarding business.

Working directly within our local office, you will serve as the financial bridge between our operational logistics teams, regional management, and external tax authorities, ensuring full compliance with Japanese Accounting Standards (J-GAAP).

Key Responsibilities

Daily Accounting & Logistics Finance

  • Process daily accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR), ensuring accurate invoicing for freight, customs, warehousing, and carrier services.
  • Perform daily bank reconciliations, cash flow monitoring, and petty cash management.
  • Reconcile vendor statements from shipping lines, airlines, trucking providers, and customs brokers against internal operational bookings.
  • Calculate and process employee expense reports (Keihi Seisan) and travel allowances.

Financial Reporting & Closing Operations

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual closing statements (Getsu-ji / Nen-ji Kessan) under J-GAAP guidelines.
  • Generate balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and budget vs. actual variation reports for executive review.
  • Assist in tax filing preparations, including Consumption Tax (Shouhizei) returns, corporate tax documentation, and fixed asset tax schedules.

Compliance & Audit Support

  • Maintain orderly financial records, tax documents, and official invoices (Tekikaku Seikyusho / Qualified Invoice System).
  • Coordinate with external Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), tax advisors, and auditors during annual financial audits.
  • Ensure strict adherence to internal control procedures and Japanese financial regulations.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: 3–5+ years of in-house corporate accounting experience in Japan. Prior accounting experience in logistics, freight forwarding, trading, or transport sectors is highly preferred.
  • Accounting Certifications: Nissho Boki Level 2 (日商簿記2級) or higher preferred.
  • Language Proficiency:
    • Japanese: Native / High Business level (essential for handling Japanese tax documents, vendor communication, and local compliance).
    • English: Business level (capable of handling international vendor invoices, corporate financial reporting, and communication with global teams).
  • Knowledge Base: Deep practical understanding of J-GAAP, Japanese corporate tax regulations, and the Qualified Invoice System (Tekikaku Seikyusho Seido).

Technical Skills

  • Hands-on proficiency with accounting ERP software (e.g., SAP, Oracle, freee, Money Forward, or Yayoi Accounting).
  • Advanced MS Excel skills (Pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, financial modeling).
